Overview
Diet and food recipe app, personalised to the individual's tastes. It provides strict or casual dieters with a range of personalised recommendations to improve cooking skills, healthy eating habits or weight loss journey by providing a variety of nutritious and suitable meals recipes.
The Brief
Malnutrition, in all its forms, is a critical global public health problem. Increasingly, the conditions of undernutrition and overweight, obesity and diet-related noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) coexist in nations, communities and households. Similarly, overweight, obesity and diet-related NCDs - which are increasing in children and adults, especially in urban populations - result in premature mortality and the early onset of disease with high levels of disability.
In 2015, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight or obese worldwide, while 462 million were underweight. In 2016, over 340 million children aged 5–19 years were overweight or obese, while 192 million were underweight. Furthermore, in 2017, 151 million children aged under 5 years were affected by stunting, while 38 million were overweight and 51 million were affected by wasting.
Process
We followed the Double Diamond approach because it enables self awareness where discovery and definition work is lacking. It also allowed us to map and understand the problems, so we know what to do next and what tools are available to use.
Discover
We started by learning about the different variables that affect the problem and its possible solution. It was important for us to start by laying down the problem, presenting our hypothesis, and defining ways we can learn more from the users. To effectively solve the problem we needed to identify and contextualise the actual problem or opportunity.
Nearly 61% of Americans often struggle to find something suitable to wear despite owning a full closet. This data by Trunk Club points to a common disconnect between owning clothes and effectively utilizing them, emphasizing the need for a solution like SmartDrip to simplify daily outfit selections.
User Research
The goal of this study is to understand the major pain points that people who are on a causal or strict diet plan experience, people who did not follow a diet before but want to change this or people who are already used to a specific diet as well as the limitations of the existing platforms they use. We also wanted to learn about the local names and sources of healthy food in the area.
We will also employ generative research techniques to gain a better understanding of our customers' experiences with our brand as well as the diet challenges and needs they face.
Some of the questions I asked during the research were:
Balancing the goal with user needs
After observing and noting key insights from the research, we summed up our learning from the engagement with people to visually distil various pieces of information about the customer’s experience into a single reference point. We created an Empathy map for Blessing, one of the personas.

The intentions of this exercise were:
We kept reframing the design challenge into an actionable problem statement to identify the most critical insights about the users' underlying human wants that we should address. In order to guide our insights about the users and their needs in some given scenario, We created a POV.
